History

In 1972, when Andrew Stein was an Assemblyman for this district, he had a storefront office where seniors gathered. He saw the need for a space for them to congregate, and so he invited interested community members to discuss the need for a senior center.

The time was right, as money had just become available from the government, through the Older Americans Act, for such a place. This group of community members was able to demonstrate the real need for a senior center, both through statistics for the area, which showed a high population of seniors, and through the concrete needs the retirees themselves brought to the discussion. With the help of the resources of Mr. Stein's office, a contract was granted and then a site was found.

The center opened on March 8, 1975, and has been in continuous operation since then. From the very beginning, the seniors themselves were involved in the running of the center. It was through the commitment of these early members, who did everything from delivering the rent check to filling up salt and pepper shakers, that the center was able to thrive.
